3 Transition Drill: Attack / defend / Attack

Set-Up

3 players starting with a ball each, standing in between a set of cones plus a goalkeeper.

Description

Phase 1

The blue player, on the left, begins the drill by simply dribbling forward and then taking a shot at goal.

Phase 2

As soon as the first blue player has taken the shot, he/she must quickly turn around and start defending against the red player.

Now the red player will dribble out with the ball and must attempt to make space for a shot at goal.

Phase 3

When the attempt at goal has been taken, the blue player will now switch into attacking mode whilst the red player will become a defender.

So now, as the second blue player dribbles out and starts the attack, we have a 2v1 (+GK) situation with the 2 blues against the red player.

KEY DEVELOPING ASPECTS:

  • Dribbling skills
  • Decision making in attacking situations
  • Body position when defending
  • Quick transition between attacking defending and vice versa
  • Finishing

Tip:

Give points to the players when they score a goal (as an individual and as part of a team in the 2v1) and when they defend successfully.
