Short Intensive SSG

This is a great fitness drill that my players have enjoyed. Whilst the emphasis is on improving the players fitness capacity, the drill is game specific and so there are many technical and tactical aspects that are included in the training drill such as:

  • Defensive covering and marking
  • Creating space
  • Dribbling technique  

Set-Up

  • Mark out a playing area, roughly 20×20 yards, 
  • 2 teams of 6 players (plus a goalkeeper each)
  • Each outfield player is assigned a number
  • Players line up at the side of the goal, behind the by-line

Description

The players will play the game in number order 1,2,3 etc… The coach will pass the ball into the middle of the playing area to start the play. The game proceeds as follows:

  • 20 seconds 1v1 (x3 for each player) with each game quickly commencing after the previous game finishes
  • 2 minute rest
  • 40 seconds 2v2 (x3 for each player) with each game quickly commencing after the previous game finishes
  • 2 minute rest
  • 1 minute 3v3 (x3 for each player) with each game quickly commencing after the previous game finishes
