Speed of Play

The drill is aimed at improving the speed of play, with the ball, between a small number of players.

Set-Up

  • 3 small cones or flat discs are placed in a vertical line (x3), in front of a goal
  • 1 large red cone is placed on the end of each vertical line, a metre away from the last small cone
  • 1 large blue cone is placed 2 metres away from each large red cone
  • 3 attacking players start along the six-yard box
  • 3 defending players start on the by-line
  • A goalkeeper or you can use some mini goals (without a goalkeeper)

Description

Ball begins with the middle attacking player. On the coaches whistle, the 3 attacking players make two diagonal passes, each pass roughly aimed at each cone.

When the ball reaches the last small cone, the player will stop the ball and each of the three attackers will run around the red cone.

The three attackers repeat the passes on the way back, with the second pass arriving to the middle player, before making a one touch finish at goal.

The three defending players must sprint around the blue cone, at the same time, but on the way back they are allowed to intercept the ball if they can.

Variation

This drill can be adapted with the following variation.

Set-Up

  • Use an area of 40 x 20 yards
  • 2 goals at either side of the playing area
  • Place a number of mannequins or cones inside the playing area
  • Players line up in groups of 3’s along the by-line

Description

In their groups of three the players pass the ball to each other in order to progress up the pitch, without hitting the mannequins. They complete the passing combination with a shot at at goal or a pass into a mini goal.

This is then repeated in the opposite direction.
