1 and 2 – Midfielders

3 and 4 – Wide attacking players

5 and 6 – Nº 10 role (behind the striker) / striker

Blue Players are all defenders

Description

The exercise for each position are:

  • 1 and 2 – run forwards and backwards, in a N shape direction
  • 3 and 4 – Sideways through the ladders and then forwards and backwards through the blue cones
  • 5 – Sideways through the ladders and then a one touch pass to player Nº 6 (Nº 6 just plays the pass to Nº 5 but is not working)
  • Blues run forwards (diagonally) and backwards to each of the 2 blue cones in front of them. If you have any extra defenders, give them a ball and place them opposite the defender that is working. Each time the defender reaches the blue cone, have them serve the ball in the air so that the defender working must perform a header

Players work for a duration of 30 seconds in this first phase of the exercise.

After the 30 seconds have finished, the reds will quickly sprint forward with the blues dropping off to defend. The coach will play a ball to one of the wide players, in the attacking half, and he/she will control the ball before putting in a cross.

The blue full back will not engage with the wide player in this phase and so will allow the cross to be executed.

Blues simply try to defend the cross and to clear the ball first time.

When the ball has been cleared or a goal has been scored, we enter the third and final phase of the exercise.

The blue defenders squeeze up the pitch whilst the two red midfielders will quickly drop back to receive a pass from the coach.

Now the players simply play attackers v defenders until a goal is scored or the blues clear the ball.
