Speed Combination Play

A dangerous tool for any team to possess is the ability to counter-attack with speed. Just like any other tactical situation, this needs to be practiced so that players can create an understanding with each other as they attack the opposition’s goal at speed.

The following drill is a great exercise to do, before the main counter-attacking exercise that you have planned, to get the players combining well with each other.

Set up

In a pre-determined area, place a number of mannequins or cones inside the playing zone but make sure there is a good amount of space in between the cones for players to move into.

A large goal, with a keeper at one end or alternatively you can use a mini goal with no keeper.

Desription

Players participate in the exercise in groups of 3’s. The middle player starts with the ball to begin the counter-attack by making a forward pass to either of the other two playes.

The three players must quickly find spaces in between the cones to combine with each other before shooting into the large goal or finishing with a pass into the mini goal.

To emphasise the importance with speed, explain that the players only have a specific number of seconds to get there shot off or pass into the ini goal.
